My reminiscences of the war and reconstruction : proof sheets, 1905?

Pinckney's reminiscences include excerpts from a jouunal kept from May 1864 when his regiment marched to join the Army of Northern Virginia. He describes his capture on May 28th, subsequent imprisonment at Fort Delaware, Morris Island and Fort Pulaski, eventual exchange and life on his plantation, El Dorado, near Charleston, after the war. Of interest are descriptions of being guarded by black Union troops and efforts by an officer of the 54th Massachusetts to learn more about the burial of Robert Gould Shaw; the discovery that another captured Confederate is actually a woman, possibly Barbara Ann Duravan; pillaging by bands of deserters in northwest South Carolina after the war; reconstruction on lowland plantations; illegal practices during the election of 1876; and attempts to recover an heirloom sword taken by a Union officer.
